Nashville's stylish Pink Spiders remember the days when rock was all about thwarted desire, forbidden dances, and working up a righteous sweat. The music on SWEAT IT OUT encourages a kind of squeaky-clean rebellion that's miles away from the destructive impulses of punk, rap, metal, etc. More power pop than punk, songs like "Seventeen Candles" and "Here Comes Trouble" are clear descendants of Cheap Trick's wry, square-peg '70s rock. It's the kind of pure pop that seems as if it should be all over the top 40, but rarely finds a home anymore.
