The second album by Fullerton, California, indie rockers Cold War Kids, LOYALTY TO LOYALTY, furthers the dark-toned Radio meets the Black Keys approach of their debut, ROBBERS AND COWARDS. Nathan Willets' vocals, which owe a debt to the likes of Nick Cave, Jack White, and the Gun Club's Jeffrey Lee Pierce, are even more striking in their pained tones, while the band's blend of chilly art pop and blues-influenced rock-&-roll bashing is more subtly and equitably distributed on tracks like "Every Valley is Not A Lake" and "Welcome To The Occupation." Though flashes of light occasionally surface on tunes like "Mexican Dogs" and "Dreams Old Men Dream," the despondent "Golden Gate Jumpers" is closer to the album's overall mood.
